Update on the Friday Project

Dave and Justin managed to just finish their project before soccer practice.

Can't tell what it is yet?

It's a mini chicken coop custom fit on top of a garden bed!

Justin's hand painted sign. Apparently it's a painting of him, Daddy, and a nail (L to R)

Dave has had this idea for awhile of building a coop on top of a garden bed. Fall/winter tilling and fertilizing all in one! He whipped this out today (no plans, not even a measuring tape! is he talented or what?!) with Justin. It needs a couple final tweaks but all in all it's spectacular. One of our new chickens is abiding in it for now. We have inherited 3 new chickens in the past month or so due to young hens flying into our yard. They stick around, so we decided to adopt them. Today Dave found this one (whom we named Autumn) being mauled by the dog next door. We figured she needed some extra protection and TLC (she gets picked on by our hens in the big yard too). She seems very happy so far, if slightly confused by her lack of freedom.

And I couldn't help but take a few more garden shots; it was such a beautiful, crisp fall day.

The calendula are coming back with the cooler weather. I love the gorgeous autumn colors.

The nasturtiums are also taking off again now that the hot weather is behind us. Justin and I planted carrots earlier this week too. Garlic and potatoes go in next!
