Sklad and the Red Sled, written and illustrated by Justin!

This past week, as part of a reading/writing lesson working with sk- and sl- blend words, I asked Justin to finish this sentence: "I slid on a..."  He ended up writing a complete book with illustrations. I LOVE this new phase he's in! We teamed up and I wrote up the story as he dictated. Then I printed out the text while he illustrated. Here is "Sklad and the Red Sled" (he was inspired to name the cat Sklad because of our sk/sl blended words :) ) Click on any of the pictures to see them larger.

Sklad and the Red Sled (red glitter: sled)

Sklad the cat slid on a red sled.
O! O! O! O!
Sklad bumped into a rock.

When the red sled hit the rock,
Waaaaaah! The red sled flew into the air!
The red sled hit the ground with a bump.

Justin decided to have the red sled be covered with red glitter on every page. On the left page, you can see the rock that Sklad and his sled bumped into. Apparently it was a flaming rock!

Sklad the cat picked up the red sled and walked over to the biggest hill in town.
It wasn’t the hill that he went down before.

He went down the biggest hill in town and he jumped off the biggest rock on that hill and it went so high up it went right over a building and kept going and going until
Waaaaaaahh!!...

Down
Down
Down
Until it hit the ground.
BOOM!
The sled burst into little pieces and the red sled was gone.

Sklad the cat survived, but he bought
another red sled just like his other one and took it for a spin.
He went so fast that he did not notice that same rock was right in front of him.
He steered the sled to the left and bumped into a tree.

Here is Sklad, sledding right over a building (with his sled breaking up into pieces. His hand-wirtten text says "The pieces of the red sled went up and down."

Another day he took the sled out for a spin and bumped into the rock and the sled went SPLAT! All over the grass and snow.

He bought another red sled and took it for a spin. And that red sled didn’t break until the day of the sledding contest. He took it for a spin before all the people got there. He knew he would win because that sled went 50-hundred miles an hour!

...and the sled went SPLAT!

The sledding contest began and Sklad’s sled was indeed in the lead...
until it hit the finish line post and it broke right apart.
Sklad the cat was the winner!

He went to the store and bought—not a red sled—but a yellow sled, an orange sled, and a pink sled. “These sleds should last
until next Christmas. No more red sleds for me!”

Notice all the pieces of the red sled that "broke right apart"
