Grand Canyon: Day 2

The next morning, Dave and I stumbled out of bed and outside a few steps to the rim to catch the sunrise. Again, it was marred by the myriad of languages spoken and people milling about, but it was still beautiful.

After the sunrise and 3 cups of coffee (the blessed Bright Angel coffee shop has free refills until 10:00 a.m.!!!) we again hopped on a shuttle bus and headed out to the farthest point: Hermit's Rest.

Waiting for our bus
Here comes the shuttle!
A view of Grand Canyon Village and the start of the Bright Angel trail: look closely at the lower right and you can see the horses (mules?) beginning their descent

A close up shot of the mule train starting down the canyon.

The Bright Angel trail zig zags down the canyon. People actually descend this trail. On foot and on donkeys. Donkeys, people!! I will never be one of them. But it was fun to see others riding down the trail.

Each viewpoint had its own distinct experience of the canyon. We finally found the solitude and peace we were craving while viewing this magnificent part of God's creation.

This was taken at The Abyss, a sheer 2,000 foot drop off. There were no guard rails.

The Colorado River

The Colorado River follows a fault line through the canyon

Notice this cute little chipmunk, peacefully eating his breakfast?

This is where he was perched! Do you see him scampering on the edge of the rock? There is nothing, nothing! past that rock but the canyon's bottom.
